ASARO'S UPCOMING
PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE
du Maurier Downtown Jazz
presents
"WILD STRIDE"
at
Walter Hall, University
of Toronto
A one-of-a kind
2-piano concert featuring two masters of stride:
Neville Dickie and Paul
Asaro
One of the world's leading
exponents of Stride piano and Boogie Woogie, Britain's Neville
Dickie is respected as one of the finest interpreters of the
works of Fat's Waller. Teamed with the brilliant young US stride
pianist, Paul Asaro, these two bring an evening to include works
by Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake and James P. Johnson.
Paul Asaro has established
himself amongst North America's leading jazz pianists. A specialist
in classic solo jazz piano traditions including harlem stride
and ragtime. As one of the youngest artists performing this
century old music, Paul has a vast repertoire and adds great
humour to the stage with his portrayal of some rare and wonderful
vocals from this era.
Neville Dickie "discovered"
Paul Asaro while they both performed at the International Ragtime
Festival in Alexandria Bay, NY., They shared at the stage briefly
at the Toronto Classic Jazz Festival, 1995 and enjoyed great
2-piano rapport at that time. Neville, in fact, described
Paul as "Up there with the very best". They have since
wished for the opportunity to formally share the stage in concert.
Neville Dickie's credits
are too numerous to mention since he has also shared the stage
with many of the world's leading jazz musicians. He has recorded
extensively as soloist, with his band - The Rhythmakers - with
his Trio, and with such artists as Louis Mazetier from France.
More information on Neville can be found on his website at www.nevilledickie.com
Paul has developed impressive
solo and band credits, having played alongside some of the world's
greatest stride pianists including Butch Thompson, Marian McPartland,
and, of course, Neville Dickie. A versatile artist, he has performed
as a duo with Toronto's Jim Galloway, with US soloists and in
ensembles including Jacques Gauthe, Dan Levinson, Brian Ogilvie,
Jon Erik Kellso, and Jeff Healey. He also accompanied Steve
Allen on his riverboat show, Delta Queen, in 1996.
Concert-goers are guaranteed
a great evening celebrating the Fats Waller centenary (2004)
with two world-class exponents of his music, and the music from
this era.
